I am new to having entire lovely weekends off. I could really get used to this! I am going to take some new pics for the blog today! I may indulge in a new knitting book if there is an inspiring one to be found. Lots of new stuff going on!

Oh, and my hat from last post is all shiny and new! I decided to change the pattern from Tam C to Tam B and I really like it a lot.

So there you have it! Big plans! I’m off to have some fun!

A snowbound weekend…

I spent the entire weekend warm and snug at home. The snow started before noon Friday and continued until early Saturday evening. I haven’t measured, but with the 35 mile per hour winds I still had 18+ inches sitting on the roof of my car and walking, the snow is higher than my knees. Tomorrow is a work day so I spent a fair amount of time today shoveling my car out.

Friday, work closed at 5:00 pm and when everyone was braving the crazy drive home, my goofy self drove across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Fibre Space. It looked fine when I came in, and really I didn’t stay long. Well long enough. When I came out it was all dark and snowy but Fibre Space looked so warm and welcoming I just had to snap a picture!

I also noticed how charming Alexandria looked as I was driving back to the Beltway. No wonder Daniel loved it there so much.

So pretty and sparkly. Sorry for the blur- my camera doesn’t like to take pics of snow falling!

But on to the goods! I got some Mochi yarn

which, when paired with a hank of Malabrigo Worsted in Natural became this:

The pattern is Three Tams from Knitty. I cast on because, truly I need a winter hat. Something thick. Warm. Pretty. Oh, and something that matches my coat, which is a rusty-red color and god-awful hard to match. Everything else I have clashes and well, that is the beauty of being a knitter; you can create whatever you need to match whatever you might need it for!

Alas, I made an error and need to rip a good bit of it back. I also made the stranding too tight and need to fix that so it behaves like a tam and not a skullcap. But for my first stranded knitting project I am rather pleased.

I am also mostly done the foot of the Peeps sock. I still need to finish the toe, and start its mate but I am sure I can make the self-imposed deadline of Feb 28th.

My friend Becky and I are trying to knit 1 pair of socks per month for the entire year. We tried this last year and I think I ended up with 2 pairs that went as gifts, 2 pairs that went on my feet and 1 pair that totally went the way of SSS. Once I started my new job I had a hard time reordering my schedule to include knitting time. I am still struggling with that so we shall see.

We are due to get up to 2 feet of snow, beginning tomorrow and ending sometime Saturday night. I am thrilled and every one around me is grumbling. Work has already decided to shut down Saturday and I suspect we will close early tomorrow night. This is as close as I get to a long weekend. Of course I’m thrilled!

One major goal I have this weekend is to find the software for my camera so I can get some decent pictures on here. Whats a blog without photos right?

Since this is a knitting-among-other-things blog, I wanted to post a bit about my current project. I am working on a pattern called Whisper Rib and Lace socks. The pattern can be found in Luxury Yarn One Skein Wonders.
When I saw the picture I knew I wanted to knit them.

The yarn is Miss Babs Yummy sock yarn in “Peeps”. The website photo is much more accurate. This yarn is bright! It definitely brings marshmallow Peeps to mind.

I really like how this yarn knits up. The lace is graceful and the picot edging is so nicely defined.

I can’t wait to finish this pair and get them on my feet!

As a side note: We are due for between 1 and 2 feet of snow this weekend depending on how the storm track goes. Happy snowbound knitting!!!

A new beginning…

It’s snowing. That is the first statement on my brand new blog. It’s snowing. How perfectly lovely. In my mid 30′s, well past the age of snow days, hot chocolate with marshmallows and sledding down hills that seem much larger climbing up than sliding down, I still get excited about snow. And by excited I mean overcome with childish exuberance. To the point of embarrassment. Seriously.

The drive home from work tonight was slow, but of course I didn’t mind. After all, it’s snowing. My favorite snow driving hobby is to put on the high beams so the snow is illuminated, coming at me like I have just commanded Scotty to go to Warp Factor 3. I could also spend hours sitting under street lights watching the lovely fluff cascade past the golden light. When I had a 3rd floor office with a huge wall of windows I would fix my eye to one single flake and watch it fall gracefully down as long as my eyes could strain to see it. I love snow.

Tonight I decided to drive past my favorite park, a hidden quiet corner of my world, where I could listen to the solemn hush that only comes with a good snowfall. I roll down the window and turn off the engine. I shiver as the heat from the cars interior quickly dissipates and my breath becomes plumes of steam. The world is calm, quiet and at peace at least in this small corner, at least for this moment. Some distant memory picks at the back of my brain, something about snow and harness bells. Then I remember and smile. An old Robert Frost poem I used to love but hadn’t thought of in years - Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. I recited it aloud, from memory, surprised at the ease with which the words came. The last line, “And miles to go before I sleep” ended and I chuckled to my self wondering if I had waxed poetic for my own benefit, or for the benefit of the trees.
